Turkish Support to Human Rights Warrior
According to Turkish daily newspaper “Sabah”, Prof.Dr.Yakin Erturk, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women appealed to Russia for installing an independent investigation committee for Natalya Estemirova who dedicated herself to human rights violations in Chechnya.
“I got to know her during my Moscow visit in 2005. She had met with me as a representative of Memorial human rights organisation” said Prof.Dr.Yakin Erturk.
On July 21, 2009 Prof.Dr.Yakin Erturk and her six colleagues published a joint statement and asked to set up an independent investigation committee: “Russia is obliged to conduct the highest level investigation on this issue. We, the independent rapporteurs, are ready to be part of independent investigation committe in relation with murder of Natalya Estemirova” they said in their statement.
Prof.Dr.Yakin Erturk said to Sabah’s correspondent: “Until the end of this year, Russia is supposed to give an answer to our appeal. But Russia’s report on human right is very poor, for this reason I don’t think that Russia will let a deeply investigation about murder of Natalya Estemirova”.
