Another Attempt to Rename Dudaev Avenue
Nils Ushakov, the mayor of Riga, accepted a pro-Russian delegation from the occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. The renaming of the “Avenue of Dzhoxar Dudaev (Džohara Dudajeva gatve)” is on their agenda.
On May 11, a delegation from the Russian occupied Chechen Republic Ichkeria, including Beslan Abdulmuslimov, a Chechen businessman based in Latvia, visited the mayor of Riga. According to the Latvian media, the pro-Russian Chechen delegation will stay in Riga until the weekend to conduct several official and non-official negotiations.
During the meeting with the mayor of Riga, the pro-Russian Chechen delegation shared their idea to rename the “Avenue of Dzhoxar Dudaev (Džohara Dudajeva gatve)”. They have suggested the name of “Makhmoud Esambayev”, a well-known Chechen dancer who lived from 1924-2000.
Recall that earlier the mayor of Riga had wanted to change the name of this avenue, but had not been successful. Months after the Latvian media exposed the FSB’s hand in these attempts.
