Belarus Arrests Chechen Asylum Seekers
The State Border Committee of Belarus has reported that two male Chechen asylum seekers and two children were arrested near the border of Belarus and Lithuania.
According to the press release, on the evening of September 27, Belarusian border guards arrested two adult male Chechen asylum seekers and two children, born in 2000 and 2001 at a green border between Belarus and Lithuania. During their interrogation, the Chechen asylum seekers said that a few days earlier they travelled to Poland with their wives and 8 children by train. But, Polish border guards did not let them enter by referring to a strange rule, “Polish state may accept only female asylum seekers and minors who are younger than 10 years old”. Then, their wives and young children were accepted into Poland while the two adult males and older children were sent back. Therefore, the Chechen asylum seekers were forced to use illegal methods to be reunited with their families in Poland.
It was stated that further investigation will continue, but the fate of the Chechen asylum seekers are unknown at the moment.
