Chechen Asylum Seekers Detained on Polish Border
The Polish Radio station, Rzeszow (Polskiego Radia Rzeszów) has reported that a group of Chechen asylum seekers were arrested on border of Poland and Ukraine.
On November 2nd, 11 Chechen asylum seekers tried to cross the Ukraine-Poland border in the county of Bieszczady (Powiat Bieszczadzki). The Bieszczady department of Polish Border Troops recognized the illegal border crossing and arrested the group as well as the organizers of the attempt. The organizers consisted of a Polish citizen and four Chechen men.
According to the report, Chechen asylum seekers left Chechnya in three passenger cars. Border guards indicated that all the detainees were adults. They are now in a detention center, but will be extradited to Ukraine shortly.
According to reports, this is the largest group of asylum seekers in the last 2 years who have been detained while trying to cross the Polish border.
