Chechen Stamp on Sports in Europe

During the last two months, Chechen athletes achieved good results in regional and international tournaments in wrestling, taekwondo and weightlifting.

On September 12th, an annual regional wrestling tournament for boys aged 6-16 years was held in the town of Merken at Germany’s North Rhine Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). One hundred fifty athletes from 27 different clubs attended the tournament, 14 of them being Chechens from Belgium and Germany. Here are the results for the Chechen wrestlers:

Group for 6-8 years old:
20 kg: Mansour Vagabov, (Club Raeren) Golden Medal
23 kg: Shamil Suleymanov, (Club Dyuiystrof) Bronze Medal
32 kg: Zelimkhan Akhmadov, (Club Raeren) Bronze Medal

Group for 11-12 years old:
34 kg: Umar Dzhamulaev, (Club Gütersloh) 4th place
Salman Aliev, (Club Raeren) 5th place
Suleiman Shaipov, (Club Aechen-Valyahn) 6th place
Musa Suleymanov, (Club Dyuiystrof) 8th place
38 kg: Idris Tabaev, (Club Raeren) Golden Medal

Group for 13-16 yeard old:
34 kg: Ramzan Ibragimov, (Club Essen-Delvig) Golden Medal
38 kg: Dzhoxar Gambulatov, (Club Raeren) Golden Medal
Imam Vagabov, (Club Raeren) Bronze Medal
42 kg: Rakhman Magomedov, (Club Raeren) 6th place
50 kg: Khamzat Ibragimov, (Club Essen-Delvig) Bronze Medal
54 kg: Rakhim Magomedov, (Club Raeren) Bronze Medal

On September 26, the 33rd International Alois Meier Wrestling Tournament (33. Internationales Alois Meier Alpenland) was held in the city of Penzberg, which is in Germany’s Bavaria district. Two students of Umar Chekarbiev from Austria took part in the freestyle section of this tournament. Abkhan Khakimov fought in the 34 kg category and with a great performance, he won the gold medal. The other Chechen wrestler, Rasul Razhapov performed in the 38 kg category. Rasul did not give his rivals a chance and won the gold medal as well.

On September 28, “The Norway Cup of Taekwondo”, was held in the country’s second largest city of Bergen. More than two hundred athletes attended the competition with one of them being Chechen. The athlete’s name is Akhmed Telkhigov and he has a red belt. He competed in the 70 kg weight class, defeated all his opponents and became the champion of Norway. In a previous Norway Cup, he had won a silver medal.

From October 8-10, Frankfurt, a Germany city, hosted “the Cup of Brandenburg”, a major international cup, which can be compared to European Championships. This year four hundred and forty six athletes from 34 teams of 11 countries were in attendance. Competitions were held among the junior and senior boys; junior women and girls. A Chechen wrestler, Muslim Kantaev fought in the 46 kg weight class for Club Leipzig. He defeated his rivals from Russia, Germany, Hungary and Czech Republic. As a result of his successful matches, he became the tournament’s champion and won the gold medal.

On October 17, the city of Kapellen in Belgium hosted a small international wrestling tournament for boys, men and women. Seventy nine athletes from 10 clubs out of France, Belgium and Holland attended. Chechen wrestlers dominated this tournament. Here are the results:

On October 26st, a weightlifting tournament was held in the city of Stavanger, Norway. 16 year old Chechen weightlifter, Abu Edelbiev performed in the 72 kg category. He performed very well and became Norway’s champion. The talented athlete’s coach is his father, Alu Edelbiev who was a well-known weightlifter in the 1970s and 1980s in Chechnya.

On October 31st, a Greco-Roman wrestling tournament for 6-14 year old boys was held in Dortmund, Germany. In total, one hundred and sixty five athletes from 22 clubs participated in the tournament. 13 Chechen wrestlers competed during the tournament. Here are the results:
