Chechen Asylum Seekers in Turkey Ask for Help

Waynakh Online has received an e-mail that the situation of re-settled Chechen asylum seekers in Turkey is worrying.

Chechen asylum seekers who are living in flats provided by the Turkish government said that things that had been promised to them are not being done and sympathetic people cannot see their situation because the new location is far from view.

Chechen asylum seekers told a Waynakh Online correspondent that the Turkish government gives 600 TL (about 200 Euro) to each family; it doesn’t matter how many members there are in the family. However, after they pay their electric, water and gas bills, the amount they have is not enough to survive on. The Chechen asylum seekers point out that they are not asking for welfare. They are willing to work, but so far there has not been any progress on their work permits or citizenship issues.

On the other hand, Chechen asylum seekers confirmed that 28 families returned to the Russian occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria due to the difficult living conditions in their new settlements and good offers from the pro-Russian regime. However, there are many families that cannot return to their homeland because of their participation in the national liberation movement against the Russian invaders, and they are really worried about visits from the pro-Russian regime’s representatives in their new district. They do not feel safe.
