Russian Colonists want to Rename the Dudaev Avenue in Riga
On September 3, 2009, Anna Kononova, the Press Secretary for the Mayor of Latvian Capital, reported that the Riga City Council may consider renaming to “Avenue of Dzhokhar Dudaev” (Džohara Dudajeva gatve), if they get requests by city inhabits.
In 1996, Riga City Council renamed to “Avenue of Space” into “Avenue of Dzhokhar Dudaev”. Since then, the opposition consisting of Russian colonists applied more than 40 times for rename proposal of “Avenue of Dzhokhar Dudaev”, but always it has been rejected.
On June 6, 2009, there were municipal elections in Riga, capital of Latvia. As a result the election, first time an alien party, “Harmony Centre (Saskaņas centrs, or SC)” that defends the interests of Russian colonists, swept to victory and gained 26 of the 60 seats on the city council.
