Chechen Asylum Seekers Arrested in Lithuania
The website for the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) has reported that four Chechen asylum seekers were arrested just after crossing the border between Belarus and Lithuania.
According to the website, on the evening of April 11, four male Chechen asylum seekers, 28, 30, 34, and 35 year olds, crossed the border into the Vilnius district. Lithuanian border guards retraced their steps and after a short while, they were arrested near Buivydžiai, which is 3 km west of Lithuania’s border with Belarus.
The Chechen asylum seekers ran away from the Russian occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and were dreaming of a safe life in Europe. However, the Lithuanian border guards put them in jail. A pre-trial will be held and the asylum seekers will be charged with illegally crossing the border.
