Netherlands Separates a Chechen Couple for Expulsion
Brabants Dagblad, a daily Dutch newspaper, has reported that a young Chechen mother is facing a forced deportation threat from the Netherlands into the Russian occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
According to the information, 20-year old Chechen mother Khava Kurkieva has to leave the Netherlands because of a decision that came down from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND), even though her 26-year old Chechen husband, Adam Dobriev has been a Dutch citizen for a few years, and the couple has three children, 2.5-year old Rabia, 1.5-year old Akraman and Sabina, who is almost 2 weeks old. The lawyer for the family is going to appeal to the Council of State (Raad van State), the highest judicial body for aliens. However, the lawyer has pointed out the fact that if his appeal does not stop the deportation, the mother will have to wait the council’s decision abroad and it may take a minimum of 9 to 12 months.
On the other hand, Jetty Eugster, mayor of Schijndel, the city where the Chechen couple reside and Ruud Merkes, a Socialist Party member have both been involved in the situation.
“The mother arrived to the Netherlands eleven years ago as a child without any papers, thus she can’t prove that she is a Chechen. Rules are needed in this country but at the very least we should show our humanity. This is a family with small children. What will these children do without their mother?” asked Mayor Eugster. He said that he is going to write a letter to the Minister for Immigration, Integration and Asylum Policy, Gerd Leers.
