Chechen Athletes: May 2011 Review

During May of 2011, Chechen athletes participated in competitions and achieved good results in wrestling in different parts of Europe.

On May 7, the city of Landgraf in the Netherland’s hosted the 26th border tournament in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. This year 92 athletes from 34 sports club in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France competed.

Here are the results for Chechen athletes in the Greco-Roman style:

60kg category: Bekhan Mankiev (Gold Medal)
96kg category: Aslan Bisanov (Silver Medal)
120kg category: Rizvan Shalazov (Gold Medal)

Here are the results for Chechen athletes in freestyle:

55kg category: Avlur Taymeskhanov (Silver Medal)
60kg category: Abdula Omarov (Silver Medal)
96kg category: Azamat Batuev (Gold Medal)
120kg category: Hadzhimurad Istapaev (Silver Medal)

From May 6-8, the French city of Rosny-sous-Bois hosted the Junior Wrestling Championship of France in both Greco-Roman and freestyle. Around 20 Chechen athletes participated in the championship.

Here are the results of the Chechen athletes:

66kg category: Zaurbek Khadzhiev (Silver Medal), Zelimkhan Khadzhiev (Bronze Medal)
74kg category: Islam Dudaev (Bronze Medal)
84kg category: Arslanbek Dzhankhaev (Gold Medal), Musa Musaev (Bronze Medal)

On May 15, Landgraf hosted an international tournament for teenagers. More than 60 athletes from nine sports clubs from three European countries, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany participated in the tournament.

Here are the results of the Chechen athletes:

23kg category: Mansur Vagabov (Gold Medal)
27kg category: Islam Vatsaev (Gold Medal)
31kg category: Isa Vatsaev (Silver Medal)
34kg category: Imam Umarov (Gold Medal)
38kg category: Osman Mukhiev (Gold Medal)
42kg category: Imam Vagabov (Gold Medal)
46kg category: Dzhoxar Gambulatov (Gold Medal)
50kg category: Rakhman Magomedov (Silver Medal)
63kg category: Rakhim Magomedov (Gold Medal)

Liza Makayeva, the only female Chechen wrestler in the tournament her weight class, which was 53 kg, won the golden medal.

On May 21-22, the village of Lidice, within the Czech Republic hosted a major international Greco-Roman wrestling tournament. More than 320 athletes participated in the event. Chechen athletes who fought for the Belgian Verviers Sports Club, under the management of Chechen coaches Aslan Albakov and Marat Dzeytov managed to win five gold, two silver and two bronze medals. They also placed third among clubs.
