Statement from the “Free Caucasus” Organization

The Denmark based civic organization called “Free Caucasus” has sent an appeal to Slovakian authorities in hopes of cancelling the extradition of two Chechen asylum seekers, Ali Ibragimov and Anzor Chentiev.

Here is the appeal:

As previously reported, since 2006 and arrested at the request of the General Prosecutor of Russia, two citizens of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria – Ali Ibragimov and Anzor Chentiev, have been in prison in Slovakia. A decision on 14.09.2010 by the Strasbourg Court says that they will be extradited to Russia and, as stated in the court decision, the “Russian Federation has provided guarantees of a fair trial and no capital punishment”.

What kind of assurances can Russia speak of when after capturing people during the Russian-Chechen war, members of the legitimate government of the ChRI, including the Minister of Public Security Turpal Ali Atgiriev and Parliamentary Speaker of the ChRI, Ruslan Alikhadzhiev were killed by Russia during their detentions in Russian prisons. The same fate befell the well known Chechen commanders, Salman Raduyev and Lechi Islamov. Subsequently, victims of the Russian terrorists include thousands of Chechen refugees, who go back home, believing the false propaganda of Russian protégé, Ramzan Kadyrov.

All these and large amounts of other documentary evidence indicate the absence of basic security guarantees in the Russian Federation. Given all these circumstances, and guided by the universally recognized norms and principles of international law, we demand an immediate suspension of the extradition of the Chechen refugees Ali Ibragimov and Anzor Chentiev to Russia, which would be a showing of humanity and compassion.
