A charity guitar concert for Chechen women will be held in Dresden, Germany on Saturday, July 21.

Many Chechen women have to struggle daily to survive. They have grown during the two wars and widows have to feed their children and families alone. In Grozny, the capital of the Russian occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, there is a center for women, “Women’s Dignity”. Here, Chechen women are cared for medically and psychologically. The center also provides advice on vocational training. Two lawyers practice in the center to carry out on-site training and help women to assert their rights against authorities in the courts.

Amnesty International’s Dresden branch and the women’s center “Frauenwürde” organized a charity concert to aid this Chechen NGO. The internationally known guitar soloists, Anne-Kathrin Gerberth and Bernhard Dolch, will perform at the event. Admission for the concert is either 8 or 10 Euros and will be sent in full to the women’s center in Chechnya.

Recall that the Chechen NGO “Women’s Dignity” formed in 2002 to defend and promote the rights of women living through one of modern-day Europe’s deadliest occupations. This occurred in Chechnya and was carried out by the Russian army. Women’s Dignity has a rehabilitation center in the war-torn capital of Grozny, one lawyer, one psychologist and one gynecologist provide services, and lobby on behalf of hundreds of women. It’s such an important movement, because every fifth woman in Chechnya is a widow. Female applicants to the European Court of Human Rights have suffered persecution by the authorities. Most women are unemployed and survive in harsh living conditions. Women also lead peace activism in Chechnya. A number of female Chechen activists were detained and tortured by Russian and pro-Moscow Chechen forces; some have lost their lives.
