Occupied Building in Nice Evicted

Earlier we reported that a building in Nice, France was occupied by a group of human rights activists, who did it for homeless asylum seekers. Yesterday morning, the inhabitants were evicted by the police.

According to the information, on December 6th, the District Court in Nice ordered the eviction of illegal residents in a five story building, which is owned by Nice City Hospital. On December 9th, a group of police came to the building around 6:00am. They broke the door down and proceeded to evict all the asylum seekers with force. There were more than 100 people, with around 40 of them being children. Among the asylum seekers, there were Chechen, Ingush and Dagistanian families.

After the police operation, a group of human rights activists protested the police by chanting slogans such as “The roof is a right” and clapping.

Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice welcomed the decision and said that, “The illegal occupation of the building has ended. I only welcome the law and rules of our country”. However, the spokesman of the city prefecture said that 17 people among these asylum seekers had already decided to voluntarily go back to their homelands.

“We have asked time from the court but it was rejected. Throwing the children into the streets is outrageous, especially at this time of year,” said Joseph Ciccolini, lawyer of the group “Pré-Occupants (Occupants)”.

“Why do they chase us? What have we done wrong?” said a young Chechen mother.

Here you can see a video which shows the operation of the French police:
